ADMITTED was a data visualization project made to represent the mental health of Michigan residents. It was based around the United Nations 17 Goals, with all my ideas being based on a different goal, and this project was specifically based on Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. It was inspired by my own mental health struggles and used data sourced from the Michigan Department of Human Services. The chart gave me data for 15 disorders over a span of seven years (2016-2022), and was broken down by sex as well.
I ended up only using 13 of the disorders, leaving out other psychosis for being too broad, and possible self-harm for seeming repetitive alongside the other disorders listed. I also only focused on data for three of the years: 2016, 2019, and 2022. I didn’t want to make a project that would overwhelm people when they experienced the piece.
To show the data, I designed a motion piece using Claude AI to help me code the data into a chart that went through the 3 years for all 13 disorders. It showed the actual number of patients being treated over the years, and between each year was a chart showing the actual change in percentage. Paired with an upside-down bar chart made of string and a hospital-like wristband. The strings represented the average length of stay, while the attached wristband had the information for each string. This project taught me how to make an insightful and thoughtful piece using found data on a sensitive topic, making the data visible to a wider group of people to hopefully start a conversation on the topic.
