BriefDesign and print a 100+ page book demonstrating the designer’s ability to develop and work with a more complex book structure and type system, along with exploration of form and conveying meaning.

The Laws of Simplicity was a print, perfect-bound book that involved redesigning John Maeda’s book, The Laws of Simplicity. This project had the goal of developing a more complex type system, exploring form, and conveying meaning.

For this project, I read Maeda’s book and started to think about how I could best redesign it. I first started with a grid and inputting the text to get a sense of how many pages it would be. I then tried multiple different fonts, kerning, leading spacing, and column sizes. Once I had chosen the best options, I made multiple paragraph styles for all the different types of hierarchy I would need. Then, I started to input the imagery throughout the book, adjusting the text as needed.

This project had the struggle of designing a system that could be understood and used across an entire book. But to overcome this, I spent multiple hours working on my paragraph styles, grid, and hierarchy, making sure to get feedback at all the steps so that I could make the right adjustments.
